BASF India (BASF), a subsidiary of Germany-based BASF Aktiengesellschaft, manufactures and markets agrochemicals, industrial performance products, plastics and fibers. The company was incorporated in 1943 and got its current name in 1967. Prasad Chandran is the chairman and managing director of the company.

The company operates in four segments - agricultural products and nutrition includes agrochemicals like pesticides and herbicides; performance products includes tanning agents, leather chemicals, textile chemicals, dispersions and specialty chemicals; plastics and fibers includes expandable polystyrene, engineering plastics and polyurethane business; chemicals includes inorganic chemicals, intermediates and petrochemicals; others include technical fees and research and development projects.

With a strong manufacturing and R&D base, the BASF group in India has production sites in Mangalore, Mumbai/Thane, Dadra and Dahej as well as R&D centers in Thane and Delhi. The technical R&D centre in Thane cooperates with key institutes in India like Pune University, Hyderabad University, University Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai (UICT) and National Chemical Laboratories. All the factories of BASF India are ISO certified. The Mangalore plant capacity is expanded to 65,000 TPA. The indenting and trading activity of polyurethane systems has been transferred to its wholly-owned subsidiary BASF Polyurethanes India.

BASF inaugurated a new polyurethane system house in Navi Mumbai at the start of 2007. This plant will supply custom-made solutions to the expanding automotive, footwear, appliances and construction industries in India. BASF supplies the products of 14 operating divisions to a variety of international business partners in over 200 countries.

Financials
BASF India registered a 15.39% growth in net profit to Rs 198.7 million for the quarter ended June 2007 from a profit of Rs 172.2 million for the quarter ended June 2006.

Net sales rose 14.11% to Rs 2,360.1 million for the quarter ended June 2007 from Rs 2,068.2 million for the quarter ended June 2006.

Total income rose 14.15% to Rs 2,368.5 million for the quarter ended June 2007 from Rs 2,074.9 million for the quarter ended June 2006.

The earnings per share (EPS) of the company stood at Rs 7.05 for the quarter ended June 2007.

Future Plans
BASF India is planning to expand the polymer dispersions plant capacity at Mangalore from the present 20,000 tpa to 65,000 tpa. The dispersions plant is expected to cost around Rs 410 million and will be financed by internal accruals and borrowings.
