GAIL India (GAIL), formerly Gas Authority of India, was established in 1984 by the Government of India to create gas sector infrastructure for sustained development of the gas market in the country. The company has expanded into gas processing, petrochemicals, liquefied petroleum gas transmission and telecommunications. GAIL India has also extended its presence in power, liquefied natural gas re-gasification, city gas distribution and exploration and production through equity and joint ventures participation.

GAIL has formed a wholly-owned overseas subsidiary company GAIL Global (Singapore) with the objective of actively sourcing overseas business. It has stake in China Gas Holding to explore opportunities in the CNG sector in mainland China. It has established presence in the CNG and city gas sectors in Egypt through equity participation in three Egyptian companies, Fayum Gas Company SAE, Shell CNG SAE and National Gas Company SAE. The Company?s projects in the pipeline include Thulendi-Phulpur pipeline project, Jagoti-Pithampur pipeline project, Kelaras-Malanpur pipeline project and Dahej-Uran pipeline project. In May 2008, the Company formed a wholly owned subsidiary, GAIL Gas.

In 2007-08, Gail India signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Reliance Industries (RIL) for joint cooperation in petrochemicals. Under the MoU, Gail and RIL are exploring opportunities for setting up petrochemical complexes outside India. Gail also signed MoU with HPCL, Mittal Group, OIL and Total for exploring opportunities for setting up a petrochemical plant in southern India.

GAIL India has 30 oil and gas exploration blocks and three coal bed methane blocks. The company is based at New Delhi, India.

Financials
The company announced a substantial drop in standalone net profit for the quarter ended December 2008. During the quarter, the profit of the company declined 59.22% to Rs 2,533.60 million from Rs 6,213.20 million in the same quarter previous year. Net sales for the quarter rose 35.31% to Rs 58,160.20 million, while total income for the quarter rose 34.88% to Rs 60,468.10 million, when compared with the prior year period. It reported earnings of Rs 2 a share during the quarter, registering 7.35% decline over previous year period.

Reliance Industries` (RIL) signed a transportation agreement with the company for the supply of Krishna-Godavari (KG) basin gas.

The company has acquired 9% equity stake in a petrochemical plant project of ONGC Petro additions (OPaL), coming up at Dahej in Gujarat.

The company signed term sheets for supply of natural gas to Barauni plant of Urvarak Videsh and Bhatinda, Panipat and Nangal plants of National Fertilizers (NFL).

The company on Feb 12, 2009 commissioned the 30`` dia, 50 km Ambewadi - Usar pipeline.

The company and Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for cooperation in natural gas sector.

Future Plans
The company will participate in overseas E&P bidding round and farm in opportunities in Asia Pacific, Middle East, CIS and Africa. It plans to establish petrochemical business in Iran, Saudi Arab, Egypt and Uzbekistan and have city gas ventures in Libya, Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Syria, ..etc. The company is planning to invest another Rs 180 million in augmentation and creation of new infrastructure. GAIL will invest Rs 34,130 million in the current financial year for expansion in pipeline, petrochemicals and other business development projects.
