Gujarat Alkalies & Chemicals (GUJALKALI) manufactures and markets a variety of chemicals. Promoted by Gujarat Industrial Investment Corporation, a wholly-owned company of the Government of Gujarat, the company was incorporated on March 29, 1973.

The company produces caustic acid, chlorine, hydrogen gas, hydrochloric acid, caustic potash, potassium carbonate, methyl chloride, methylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, sodium cyanide, sodium ferro cyanide, hydrogen peroxide, bleachwin, phosphoric acid, calcium chloride, dilute sulphuric acid, scalewin, aluminum chloride, and poly aluminum chloride.

The company has caustic soda capacity of 358,760 TPA. It has a manufacturing unit in Vadodara and two in Dahej. The company recently commissioned its hydrogen peroxide plant (150 tons per day capacity) in Dahej and is setting up an aluminum chloride plant (70 tons per day capacity) in Dahej. It has two gas-based power plants (90 MW captive power station in Dahej, and 40 MW joint captive power generation station in Vadodara) and is setting up a third power plant (20-30 MW) and a wind energy project.

The company is IS/ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001:1996 and IS 18001:2000 certified. Recent awards include the AIOE Industrial Relations Award 2005-2006. It has a well-equipped R&D center recognized by the department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The company has signed a MoU with DOW Europe GmbH for exploration in the in the area of chlorinated organics. It has a performance agreement with the Government of India for getting compensation of its share of USD 9.375 million till 2010 for phasing out carbon tetra chloride production.

The company exports products to USA, Europe, Australia, Africa, Far and Middle East countries, China and South Asia. Its registered office is at P.O. Petrochemicals-391346, Vadodara district, Gujarat, India.

Gujarat Alkalies & Chemicals registered a 0.79% growth in net profits to Rs 837.80 million for the quarter ended in September 2008 from a profit of Rs 831.20 million for the quarter ended in September 2007.Net Sales quarter rose 32.82% to Rs 3924.00 million for the quarter ended September 2008 from Rs 2954.30 million for the quarter ended September 2007.Total income rose 24.22% to Rs 3989.2 million for the quarter ended September 2008, from Rs 3211.3 million for the quarter ended September 2007.The earnings per share (EPS) of the company stood at quarter Rs 11.41 in the quarter ended September 2008.

Future Plans
Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals is all set to erect its third captive power plant. The company is planning to have a power generation capacity of about 20-30 MW, in pursuit of which it plans to set up the third power plant. The company earmarked an investment outlay of about Rs 1500-1600 million to set up the plant, which will be gas-based one.

The company is further planning to invest Rs 1,620 million to set up three plants in Dahej and one in Vadodara by the end of the year, besides investing Rs 1,400 million in a wind energy project in Saurashtra.
