Wyeth, a subsidiary of Wyeth US, manufactures and markets drugs, pharmaceuticals and agrochemical products in addition to animal health-care products. Incorporated as Lederle Laboratories India, Wyeth was renamed as Cyanamid India and the agricultural products division was transferred to Cyanamid Agro. The assets, liabilities and reserves of Wyeth Laboratories, John Wyeth India and Wyeth India were transferred to the company and the name of the company was changed to Wyeth Lederle. In 2003, Geoffrey Manners & Co. merged with the company and the name of the company was changed to Wyeth.
The pharmaceuticals business of the company comprises bulk drugs and formulations, like oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, antibiotics, vaccines, steroids and other prescription medicines. The company also manufactures OTC pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, toiletries and other allied consumer products. The company`s exports are predominantly to Europe and Japan. Some of the prominent brand names of the company include Wymox (antibiotic), Wysolone (corticosteroid), Ultragin (analgesic) and Ovaral (contraceptive). Formulations contribute about 70% to Wyeth`s total turnover. Exports account for about 30% of its total turnover and yield relatively higher realisations.
Financials
The company disclosed a steady growth in standalone net profit for the quarter ended December 2008. During the quarter, the profit of the company rose 18.53% to Rs 207.90 million from Rs 175.40 million in the same quarter last year. Net sales for the quarter rose 12.87% to Rs 940.40 million, while total income for the quarter rose 12.59% to Rs 989.80 million, when compared with the prior year period. It reported earnings of Rs 9.15 a share during the quarter, registering 18.52% growth over prior year period.
