Bajaj Auto (BAJAJAUTO), the flagship company of the Bajaj group, is a leading two and three-wheeler manufacturer in India. The company was incorporated in 1945. The company has a new structure where Bajaj Auto (to be renamed Bajaj Holdings and Investment) would act as the primary investment company focusing on new business activities. It will have two subsidiaries, the current Bajaj Holdings and Investment (to be renamed Bajaj Auto), which would handle the auto business; and Bajaj Finserve would focus on wind power and financial services. Rahul Bajaj is the chairman of the company.

The company produces scooters, motorcycles, mopeds and three-wheelers. It has three plants in Akurdi, Waluj and Chakan with a combined installed manufacturing capacity of 2,700,000 two and three-wheelers. The Uttarakhand plant has a planned capacity of one million motorcycles per annum. The company acquired 250 acres of land in Chakan, Pune from Government of Maharashtra for setting up a fifth plant. Along with captive process vendors, the company is to invest Rs 17.5 billion in the project. The company is to invest Rs 7.5 billion for a four-wheeler production plant to manufacture around 50,000 vehicles annually. Marketing of three-wheelers and motorcycles from its new plant in Indonesia have commenced.

The company has strategic partnership agreements with companies like Kawasaki and Kubota, Japan and has its own research and development facilities. It has a network of around 500 dealers, 1,500 service dealers and 162 three-wheeler dealers spread across the country. It has a distributor network covering over 60 countries and exports to the ASEAN region, South America and Africa.

Financials
Bajaj Auto registered a sharp drop in net profit of Rs 2,264.7 million for the quarter ended June 2007 from a profit of Rs 2,660.1 million for the quarter ended June 2006.

Net sales declined 4.25% to Rs 21,091.1 million for the quarter ended June 2007 from Rs 22,026.6 million for the quarter ended June 2006.

Total income dipped 3.72% to Rs 22,118 million from Rs 22,972.2 million for the quarter ended June 2006.

The earnings per share (EPS) of the company stood at Rs 22.4 for the quarter ended June 2007.

Bajaj Auto along with KTM Power Sports announced a wide-ranging co-operation on Nov. 5, 2007. KTM Power Sports is the second largest European sports motorcycle manufacturer. The KTM Group will provide the know-how for the joint development of high-efficient water- cooled 4-stroke engines (125-ccm and 250-ccm), which provides KTM the basis for street motorcycles in the new street entry segment. The joint developments will also be available as basis for the Bajaj-products.

Bajaj Auto will shift its production base from Akurdi to Waluj in Aurangabad on account of tax sops. At Akurdi plant, the company used to produce Chetak scooters, a household brand in its heydays.

Bajaj Auto, unveiled the company`s new structure with five broad strategic units under different heads. On May 17, Bajaj Auto had announced that it will form three separate companies looking after automobile, finance and new businesses. Two new ones, Bajaj Holdings and Investment; and Bajaj Finserv, have been created. The two-wheeler businesses will be transferred to Bajaj Holdings, which will be renamed as `Bajaj Auto`. Amongst the five segments, the two wheeler, commercial vehicles and international business segments will be the special business units (SBU).

Future Plans
The company plans to invest Rs 15 billion in three years for expansion of automobile capacity to 5.1 million vehicles by 2009. It has decided to scale up its two wheelers capacity to 4.6 million units and that of three and four wheelers to 0.5 million.

The total capacity expansion will be implemented in phases over the next three years at its existing plants in Akurdi and Chakan. Bajaj Auto will launch CNG and LPG two-wheelers over the next 12 months. The company is also going to develop a dual-fuel two-wheeler, which will run on petrol apart from CNG or LPG.
