Birla Yamaha Ltd (BYL), now a Yash Birla group company; was formed with the objective to manufacture portable generators and multi purpose engines; it was incorporated in 1984 and was promoted jointly by Tungabhadra Industries (Birla Group) and Yamaha Motor Co Ltd, Japan.

The company has manufacturing facility at Dehradun, Uttar Pradesh. With installed capacity of manufacturing 75,000 portable generator set and 25,000 multi purpose engines, BYL pioneered the portable generator market in India and is the second largest player in the portable gensets market with a 35% market share.It�s Gensets & multi purpose engines are sold under the brand name Yamaha Birla Power and Birla Power Plus respectively.

Of late, the company which started with the manufacture of portable generators and engines in the range of 0.5KW to 4KW has come with various new models and Gensets for eg. Self start generators and Yamaha brand of EF6600E (5.5KW) electric start genset. The Company currently introduced a latest generator 500 watt in Delhi market and is putting special efforts to provide instant service to the customer at his doorstep and for this purpose has adopted the franchisee route to cater to customer a better service requirements.

Recent Developments
The company has signed two MoUs with Meccalte and ACME Motori of Italy.ACMEhas given exclusive rights to BYL for selling their engines and gensets in India under the brand name ACME Motori. With Meccalte it has formed a joint venture company for manufacturing three ranges of 2-pole alternators.

BYL has implemented ERP system from Baan to integrate the total operation. The company is also setting up new manufacturing unit at Paonta Sahib (Himachal Pradesh) to manufacture all new products through the new unit and provide a better product mix. These steps are expected to improve the company�s profitability. However, the rising sales volume seems assured, with Yamaha taking active interest and using the company as a base for exports.

Mr Vijay Agarwal gets appointed as an Additional Director of the Company.

Future Plans
BYL plans to produce invertors as part of its diversification efforts as a measure to ensure compatibility with its gensets and maintain its dominance in smaller power equipment devices. Further, it plans to increase the product range in auto start, multi purpose engine applications in agriculture and diesel gensets and introduce the 1.5 HP Multi Purpose Engine to cater to the low end of the market. Apart from Delhi market, it is planning to introduce generator 500watt at other places too.
