Hindustan Unilever (HUL) has been in India since 1956. It is a 51% subsidiary of Transnational Unilever, UK. A top marketer of soaps and detergents, it has the country`s largest personal products business such as leading in shampoos, skin care products, color cosmetics, deodorants and fragrances. It is also a top player in tea, processed coffee, branded wheat flour, tomato products, ice cream, jams and squashes manufactured in around 80 factories nationwide.
It also has a presence in specialty and bulk chemicals, animal feed and fertilizers. One of the country`s largest exporters, HUL has been recognized as a golden super star trading house by the Government of India. The company has mainly grown through the inorganic route. The list of merged companies include Modern Foods, Ponds, Amalgam group of companies, Lakme, Brooke Bond Lipton India and others.
Financials
The company reported a growth in standalone net profit for the quarter ended March 2009. During the quarter, the profit of the company rose marginally 3.69% to Rs 3949.90 million from Rs 3809.50 million in the same quarter last year. Net sales for the quarter rose 5.12% to Rs 39883.30 million, while total income for the quarter rose marginally 3.55% to Rs 40085.9 million, when compared with the prior year period. It posted earnings of Rs 1.81 a share during the quarter, registering 3.43% growth over previous year period.
