Chennai-based Nippo Batteries, a joint venture with Matsushita Electric Industrial of Japan, was incorporated in Jul. 1972. The company manufactures all types of cells and batteries including manganese dioxide dry cells and batteries and their components. Battery cells are sold under the brand name NIPPO. Nippo has manufacturing units at Nellore and Tada in Andhra Pradesh.

Financials
Nippo reported a 65.79% decrease in net profits for the quarter ended Sep. 2006 to Rs 13 million as against Rs 38 million for the same quarter last year. There was 11.37% increase in sales of the company for the quarter ended Sep. 2006 to Rs 805.10 million as against Rs 722.90 million during the corresponding quarter last year. Net sales of the company for FY06 stood at Rs 2,640.55 million as compared with Rs 2,475.17 million last year. The net profit of the company for FY06 stood at Rs 102.50 million as compared with Rs 105.14 million in FY05. The EPS of the company as of Mar. 2006 fell to Rs 27.33 from Rs 28.04 in the corresponding quarter last year.

Future Plans
The company wants to strengthen its R & D activities for the purpose of cost
reduction and quality improvements and for developing new products depending on market requirements.
