Spicejet was incorporated in 1984 in the name of Genius Leasing Finance and Investment Company Limited. 1993 onwards, it ventured into domestic aviation operations. The name of the company was changed to Modiluft from M.G. Express in 1994. The company had a tie-up with Lufthansa for spares, services and maintenance and training of flight crew. It also tied up its frequent flier programme with that of Lufthansa. The company went defunct and suspended its operations in 1996. It restarted operations in 2005 under the name of Spicejet.

The Company\\\'s main activity is to provide domestic airlines including passenger and cargo services. The Company is presently operating with eight Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
The company currently operates with three leased Boeing aircrafts and positions itself as a `no frills` low cost carrier. KLM provides it with maintenance support and the company has also tied up with Navitaire, the world`s renowned low-cost support for reservations and revenue management. Currently, it connects 11 destinations across the country. The airline currently offers 210,000 seats per month and wants to double this figure by the year end and take up a market share of 10%.

Spicejet signed an agreement with Air India for the wet lease of two of the company`s Boeing 737 - 800 aircrafts. The company will operate daily flights between Lucknow, Varanasi, Jaipur and Nagpur & Jeddah. The company will operate around 120 flights and will carry around 20,000 Haj pilgrims.

Spicejet Ltd has informed BSE that the Board of Directors of the Company on April 24, 2007 has approved the acquisition of 10 new Boeing 737-800/900 ER Aircraft by converting its option into firm orders at a list price of about USD 700 million. The aircraft will be delivered from year 2009 through 2011.

Future Plans
The company has recently ordered for 20 Boeing aircrafts as it wants to expand its route networks and is also interested in flying abroad. It is already in the process of expanding the domestic network and wants to fly to South Asian countries in the future. Though it is a low cost airline, it operates on an all Boeing fleet and has no plans to acquire smaller aircrafts even for shorter destinations.
