Tata Chemicals, established in 1939, is one of India`s leading manufacturers of inorganic chemicals and fertilisers. It has an annual turnover of over Rs 35,042 million and is a part of the USD 14.25 billion Tata Group. The company operates in two segments, fertilisers and inorganic chemicals. The fertilisers segment consists of urea, phosphoric fertilisers and other agricultural inputs. Inorganic chemicals segment includes soda ash, salt, marine chemicals, caustic soda, cement and bulk chemicals. Its products have numerous end-use applications in a variety of industries.

The company is the world`s third largest soda ash producer with a combined capacity of 3 million tons and a market share of 30.8%. It has a capacity of generating over 2 million tonnes of solar salt, used for almost all the 27 basic chemicals that it produces. TCL is also the market leader in the branded, iodized salt category, where it operates under the brand name, Tata Salt. It has installed capacity of 9,69,307 tonnes per year for urea, which constitutes nearly 12% of the total urea produced in the country.

TCL is planning to set up a soda ash unit near Lake Natron, Tanzania. This will be TCL`s second unit in the African belt, following the indirect buyout of Kenya-based Magadi soda. TCL is also planning to foray into the business of flavored salt. It will produce the flavored salt in India and export it to Southeast Asia, the Middle-East and Europe.

Financials
The company disclosed a substantial drop in standalone net profit for the quarter ended December 2008. During the quarter, the profit of the company declined 95.35% to Rs 58.30 million from Rs 1,254.80 million in the same quarter previous year. Net sales for the quarter rose 2.10 times to Rs 25,658.50 million, while total income for the quarter jumped 2.08 times to Rs 25,663.60 million, when compared with the prior year period. It posted earnings of Rs 0.25 a share during the quarter, registering 95.55% decline over prior year period.
