Nifty opens lower; BPCL, ONGC, ICICI Bank down

MUMBAI: Markets were witnessing profit booking Tuesday taking cues from negative global cues. Oil&gas, banks and IT led the decline while defensives like FMCG and pharma showed some strength.

National Stock Exchange’s Nifty was at 5309.40, down 24.10 points or 0.45 per cent. The index touched a high of 5334.15 and low of 5293.40 in trade so far.

Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex was at 17701.68, down 72.58 points or 0.41 per cent. The index touched intraday high of 17777.95 and low of 17675.56.

BSE Midcap Index was up 0.33 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index moved 0.32 per cent higher.

Amongst the sectoral indices BSE Oil&gas Index was down 0.59 per cent and BSE Bankex declined 0.51 per cent. BSE FMCG Index moved 0.53 per cent higher and BSE Healthcare Index advanced 0.18 per cent.

Tata Power (1.05%), Power Grid (0.87%) and Hindustan Unilever (0.71%) were the top Nifty gainers.

Losers pack included BPCL (-2.26%), ONGC (-1.44%) and ICICI Bank (-1.40%).

Asian markets were in the red mirroring losses in the US. Nikkei 225 was down 0.42 per cent, Shanghai Composite slipped 1.77 per cent and Hang Seng fell 1.22 per cent.
