Universal Cables (UNICABLE), part of the M.P. Birla group, is primarily engaged in manufacturing electrical cables and capacitors. It was incorporated on March 6, 1945.

The ISO 9001 company manufactures a wide range of cables including PILC cables upto 33 KV, XLPE cables up to 145 KV, high temp. fluoro-plastic cables, winding wires and flat cables, and PVC cables upto 11 KV; PP capacitors with non-PCB, non-toxic oil impregnation including high tension power capacitors upto 220 KV, low tension power capacitors, furnace capacitors, DC capacitors, and technical services including turnkey projects from design to installation/commissioning of cable systems and capacitor banks. The manufacturing plant is located in Satna, Madhya Pradesh.

The R&D facilities of the company have accreditation by Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India. The joint venture companies include Birla Ericsson, producing fiber optic cables and Universal ABB Power Cables, the only company having a vertical CV line in the country, in joint venture with the renowned power equipment company Asea Brown Boveri (ABB). The company products are marketed under the UNISTAR brand name in domestic and export markets through a marketing network of branches spread all over the country and agencies abroad.

The registered office of the company is located at Post Office Birla Vikas, Satna-485005, Madhya Pradesh.

Financials
Universal Cables registered a profit of Rs 46.6 million for the quarter ended September 2007.
It recorded a net sales of Rs 1,135 million for the quarter.
Total income was Rs 1,150.1 million for the quarter ended September 2007.
The diluted earnings per share (EPS) of the company stood at Rs 2.01 for the quarter ended September 2007.

Future Plans
Looking at the dismal domestic demand, UCL is searching for new markets overseas. The emphasis on power generation and other infrastructural developments in the Tenth Plan is expected to increase demand from the domestic sector.
