Established in 1867, the company operates under ministry of petroleum & natural gas. The managing director of the company is S.K. Mukherjee.
Balmer Lawrie is the largest manufacturer of mild steel (MS) barrels and drums in India with a product range of plain steel barrels, bitumen drums, LPG cylinders etc. Manufacturing facilities are in Chennai, Kolkata, Mathura, Mumbai, Panipat, Turbhe and Silvassa. Globally, The company is also among the top ten grease manufacturers and exports significant quantities to other countries. The company also manufactures nearly 200 high-performance, value-added greases, oils and other compounds under its brand name BALMEROL. It has a tie-up with R.T. Vanderbilt, USA in India. Product range in leather includes synthetic and semi-synthetic fatliquors, synthetic tanning agents and auxiliaries. The Chennai unit is ISO 9001 certified unit by BVQI.
The company has successfully undertaken turnkey projects from pre-feasibility studies to customized client services in niche areas of infrastructure, petroleum and energy sectors, process and manufacturing plants in India as well as Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Bangladesh, CIS, Dubai, Myanmar, Nepal, Sharjah, Srilanka and the United Kingdom.
The company is engaged in the entire spectrum of tea operations from sourcing to exports. The Company owns modern warehousing, tasting, blending and packing facilities at Kolkata, Coimbatore and Bedford (UK). It supplies bulk and packet tea to Russia & CIS, West Asia and North African countries. Prominent customers include chain stores worldwide.
The company offers personalized and comprehensive services in travel & tourism through its offices at all major business centers of India. It offers a wide range of logistics & cargo services through its numerous offices in India and over 40 associates worldwide.
In IT services, besides having developed integrated line-of-business packages custom built for each of the company`s six different strategic business units, core competencies lie in the design and development of customized business solutions and the ability to model and simulate business processes of practically any industry. The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur is its technical partner.

Balmer Lawrie & Company registered a 8.68% growth in net profit to Rs 202.8 million for the quarter ended June 2007 from a profit of Rs 186.6 million for the quarter ended June 2006.
Net sales for the quarter rose 13% to Rs 3,580.7 million for the quarter ended June 2007 from Rs 3,168.8 million for the quarter ended June 2006.
Total income rose 13.67% to Rs 3,626.7 million for the quarter ended June 2007 from Rs 3,190.5 million for the quarter ended June 2006.
The earnings per share (EPS) of the company stood at Rs 12.45 in the quarter ended June 2007.

The shareholders passed an ordinary resolution to transfer the specialty container division of the company at Coimbatore engaged in the business of manufacture of freight/specialty containers and all its derivatives as a going concern to Transfer Services at a consideration of Rs 289 lakhs with effect from April 01, 2007, subject to necessary provisions and approvals.

The company completed acquisition of a plastic container unit from Gillanders Arbuthnot & Company in Chennai and also started operations.
Future Plans
The company is focusing on its plastic container division and has plans to introduce new product ranges and variants.
