National Aluminium Company , incorporated on Jan. 07, 1981 as a public sector enterprise of the Government of India, is Asia`s largest integrated aluminum complex.

A Navratna status company, it encompasses bauxite mining, alumina refining, aluminum smelting and casting, power generation, rail and port operations. The product portfolio includes aluminum ingots, sows, billets, wire rods, alloy wire rods, cast strips, calcined alumina, alumina hydrate, Zeolite-A, specialty hydrate and alumina, and aluminum rolled products. A fully mechanized opencast mine is located in the Koraput district of Orissa with a capacity of 4.8 million MTPA serving feedstock to the alumina refinery at Damanjodi located on the foothills, which has an installed capacity of 1.575 million MTPA. A 345,000 MTPA capacity aluminum smelter is located at Angul in Orissa. Close to the aluminum smelter at Angul, a 960 MW captive power plant has been established for firm power supply to the smelter.

The company has set up a 50,000 MTPA rolled products unit, integrated with the smelter plant, to produce aluminum cold-rolled sheets and coils from continuous caster route based on advanced technology from FATA Hunter, Italy. At Visakhapatnam port on the Bay of Bengal, it has established mechanized storage and ship-handling facilities for exporting alumina in bulk and importing caustic soda with a ship-loading rate of 2,200 tons per hour. Government of India has reserved bauxite deposits at Pottangi in Orissa for allotment to the company.

The ISO 9001:2000 certified company was adjudged the Best Public Sector Enterprise for its corporate social responsibility activities at the Think Odisha Leadership Awards function, organized by The Times of India and Tefla`s in August 2008. It has also bagged the Engineering Export Promotion Council`s prestigious All India Export Award being adjudged as the Star Performer in large enterprise category for its outstanding export performance during the year 2006-2007.

Continuing with its self-propelled growth, this zero-debt company is implementing the 2nd phase of its expansion program at an investment of more than Rs.50,000 million, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2008. The company had been allotted UTKAL-E coal block by the Government of India in the year 2006-2007, having a reserve of around 70 million MT, for its new units at the captive power plant. Major projects have been lined up in Andhra Pradesh in India, Indonesia, and Iran abroad. A memorandum of agreement has been signed with Bharat Earth Movers in April 2008 for production of aluminum rails and wagons, and subsequently, aluminum rail coaches and metro coaches. The company has firmly established itself as India`s leading manufacturer and exporter of alumina and aluminum,

Financials
The company reported a steep drop in standalone net profit for the quarter ended March 2009. During the quarter, the profit of the company declined 79.7% to Rs 830.20 million from Rs 4090.60 million in the same quarter last year. Net sales for the quarter declined 19.92% to Rs 11256.60million, while total income for the quarter dipped 19.94% to Rs 12334.9 million, when compared with the prior year period. It posted earnings of Rs 1.29 a share during the quarter, registering 79.69% decline over previous year period.

The company announced that it was getting ready to start preliminary work on its second aluminium project, of Rs 160 billion greenfield venture for a smelter-cum-power plant, in Orissa.

The company inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Rak Minerals & Metals Investments (RMMI) under which RMMI will have 24% stake in NALCO`s new aluminium project in Indonesia.

The company announced that it had inked a strategic alliance pact with a Canadian company Rio Tinto Alcan for increasing its presence in India and abroad.

Future Plans
The company has drawn up ambitious growth plans worth Rs.400,000 million over the next five years. These include smelter and power projects in Indonesia and Iran. Besides, the company is planning brownfield and greenfield projects within the country.

On completion of the 2nd phase of its expansion program scheduled for 2008 end, capacities at the bauxite mines would increase to 6.3 million MT, the alumina refinery capacity would go up to 2.1 million MT, the aluminum smelter upto 460,000 MT, and the power plant upto 1,200 MW.

A mines and refinery complex is being planned in Andhra Pradesh. The bauxite mines capacity will be 4.2 million MT, while the refinery will have a capacity of 1.4 million metric tons. The project will involve an investment of Rs.70,000 million. In Orissa, a smelter and power complex has been planned in the Jharsuguda district at an investment of Rs.85,000 million envisaging a smelter of 0.5-million MT capacity and a power plant of 1,260 MW capacity.

Abroad, the company has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of Indonesia to set up a 0.5-million MT smelter and a 1250 MW captive power plant. NALCO plans to invest around Rs.140,000 million in this greenfield project. In Iran, a 0.33-million MT smelter has been planned in two phases as a joint venture with ALPHA (in which Kerman Development Organization is the major partner). The project cost will be approximately Rs.80,000 million.

Other projects include an aluminum park in Angul as a joint venture with Orissa Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO). For this, 500 acres of land is being acquired. An expression of interest has been invited from competent parties to set up a cement plant based on fly ash from the company`s power plant at Angul.
