Ambuja Cements (ACL) was set up in 1986 as Gujarat Ambuja Cements. Its principal activity is to manufacture and market cement and clinker for both domestic and export markets. It was the first company to introduce the concept of bulk cement movement by sea in India. ACL also operates a hotel through its subsidiary GGL Hotel and Resort Company. The Group conducts financial trading business through its subsidiary GACL Finance. ACL, with a total capacity of 16 million tons, is the lowest cost producer of cement in the world. The Company owns a fleet of seven ships with a capacity of 20,500 dead weight tonnage (DWT) to ferry bulk cement to the packaging units.

Ambuja Cements has shown innovation in utilizing measures like sea transport, captive power plants, and imported coal and availing of government sops and subsidies to constantly check the costs. Last year, ACL entered into a strategic partnership with Holcim, the second largest cement manufacturer in the world.

Ambuja Cements also has an investment in ACC through its subsidiary, Ambuja Cement India. The Company?s subsidiaries include Ceylon Ambuja Cements (Private), Kakinada Cements, M.G.T Cements and Chemical Limes Mundwa. ACL is based at Mumbai, India.

Financials
The company announced a marginal rise in standalone net profit for the quarter ended March 2009. During the quarter, the profit of the company rose 2.41% to Rs 3,340.50 million from Rs 3,262.00 million in the same quarter last year. Net sales for the quarter rose 12.56% to Rs 18,626.60 million, while total income for the quarter rose 11.39% to Rs 18,884.80 million, when compared with the prior year period.

It reported earnings of Rs 2.19 a share during the quarter, registering 2.34% growth over previous year period.

Holcim, the world`s second largest cement maker, hiked its stake in Ambuja Cements (ACL) by 3.15% to about 40% for Rs 7,140 million through open market operations. The Swiss cement major purchased 48 million shares of Ambuja Cements for an average cost of Rs 148.80 a share

1. In order to increase its capacity by 6 million tons, Ambuja Cements earmarked an investment of Rs 35 billion for the next two or three years.

2. The company will be commissioning a cement grinding unit having 1-million ton capacity at Roorkee, Uttarakhand during the current quarter.3. Upgradation work on the cement plant at Rabriyawas, Rajasthan is in progress and will also be commissioned during the current quarter. With this, the clinkering capacity in Rajasthan will increase from the current 1.5 million tons to 2 million tons per annum.4. Work is ongoing for the clinker expansion projects in Bhatapara and Rauri, and associated split grinding units. 5. In addition, captive power projects at the plants in Rahriyawas, Ropar, and Maratha, which will deliver in total 178 MW of capacity, are currently at various stages of completion.6. The first phase of the thermal power plant in Ambujanagar, Gujarat was commissioned during the quarter providing 30 MW of power generating capacity. It also commissioned its new 1-million ton cement grinding unit in Farakka, West Bengal during the quarter.
