Tata Power Company (TATAPOWER) is part of Hydro-Electric Power System which also comprises Tata Hydro-Electric Power Supply Company and Andhra Valley Power Supply Company. TATAPOWER has hydel plants at Bhira, Bhivpuri, and Khopoli and a thermal power plant at Trombay. A combination of hydel and thermal enables TATAPOWER to charge lower tariff to clients, since the variable cost of generating hydel power is only a small fraction of the cost of thermal. The group?s principal activities are to generate, transmit and distribute electricity. The other segment includes electronic equipment, broadband services, project consultancy, terminalling, investments and oil exploration.

In April 2007, TATAPOWER acquired Coastal Gujarat Power, a special-purpose vehicle formed for Mundra Ultra Mega Power Project. In June 2007, it acquired 30% equity stakes in PT Kaltim Prima Coal and PT Arutmin Indonesia, as well as related trading companies. The Bangladesh project was acquired during 2003 for USD 8.9 million. It comprises a 132-kv Ishurdi-Baghabari transmission line and a 230-kv Ishurdi-Khulna transmission line to evacuate electricity from plants of Power Grid Corporation of Bangladesh to their substations. Tata Power Trading Company (TPTCL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Tata Power Company (TATAPOWER), undertakes inter-state trading of power in the country. As of January 22, 2008, North Delhi Power became a subsidiary of the Company.

The company has undertaken projects in power plant and utility operations and management in Saudi Arabia, Liberia, Iran, Sierra Leone and Algeria. Recently, Tata Power chalked out an investment plan of Rs 62 billion for the next five years. TATAPOWER is based at Mumbai, India.

Financials
The company reported a steep drop in standalone net profit for the quarter ended December 2008. During the quarter, the profit of the company declined 48.76% to Rs 1010.80 million from Rs 1972.80 million in the same quarter last year. Net Sales for the quarter rose marginally 22.69% to Rs 17414.70 million, while total income for the quarter rose marginally 22.36% to Rs 17874.7 million, when compared with the prior year period. It posted earnings of Rs 4.56 a share during the quarter, registering 50.43% decline over previous year period.
